Why is this important?
Trillions of microbes, above all bacteria, settle on our skin as well as on our mucous membranes, in particular in our intestines. The number of bacteria in our bowels, roughly 100 trillion, is 10 to 100 times greater than the total number of cells which make up the human body. All these microbes together form the so called microflora of the intestines or intestinal flora.
Most of these bacteria are extremely useful and friendly helpers in carrying out some of the vital functions of the body.
